5 Misconceptions of Moissanite

1) Is Moissanite a diamond?

Moissanite is not a Diamond, though it can be used as a diamond alterntive. Diamonds are made out of carbon, while moissanite is composed of silicon carbide. Moissanite has the optical properties of a diamond. There is an array of reasons why consumers today prefer moissanite over diamonds - The fact that it is ethically sourced and has a higher refractive index (it sparkles more than diamonds) appeals to many.

2) Is moissanite a cubic zirconia?

Cubic zirconia is also a diamond alternative - moissanite is NOT cubic zirconia. Cubic zirconia is approximately an 8 on the Moh`s schale of hardness, while moissanite measures an impressive 9.5! A diamond on the other hand has a hardness of a 10 on the Moh`s scale of hardness. This makes Moissanite the perfect alternative to diamonds as it does not scratch or fade as easy as cubic zirconia. Moissanite lasts a lifetime!

3) Is moissanite fake?

Moissanite is not fake - it is created in a laboratory due to the fact that natural moissanite is found in small clusters and is not big enough to be cut into gemstones for the use in jewellery.

4) Is moissanite expensive?

Moissanite is not expensive when compared to their diamond counterparts. This means that when comparing the 4`Cs (color, clarity, cut, and carat weight), moissanite will come in at 85% lower than a diamond! This price difference does not take away from the quality of a moissanite as even experienced jewellers find it difficult to distinguish between diamonds and moissanite stones.

5) Is moissanite low quality?

Moissanite is not low in quality as it is very durable - it will last you a life time! It is 9.5 on the Moh`s scale of hardness, 2nd to a diamond. Moissanite will remain extremely high in clarity grade throughout their lifetime - staying loop clean with no inclusions visible.
